Green Eyes, Dark Nights, and Damn Good Coffee
Posted onHow the Navy SEALs Were Forged, How the NSF Backs Them, and Why Your Mug Needs This Blend
Ahoy, coffee fiends and fellow Sailors! Time to saddle up, because we’ve got big news—and like a tropical cyclone rolling in at flank speed, it’s coming in hot, wet, and ready to knock you off your feet like a rogue wave on the midwatch. Old Salt Coffee is now proudly supporting the Navy SEAL Foundation (NSF), which means every time you throw back a bag of Green Eyes Blend, we’re sending $1 per bag to support the warriors who own the night. Our 2025 goal: $2,000.
Now, in true Old Salt fashion, let’s dive deep into the badass origins of the Navy SEALs, the no-quit support of the NSF, and why we named this bold-as-hell coffee “Green Eyes” in the first place. Get your mug ready—this one’s gonna be strong.
From Frogmen to America’s Apex Predators
Back in World War II, before we had high-tech gear and SEAL Team Six making pirates rethink their life choices, we had the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs)—the original "frogmen." These lunatics were the Navy’s answer to beach-clearing, swimming into enemy waters half-naked and armed with nothing but guts, knives, and explosives. They blew up enemy obstacles, reconned coastlines, and got the job done before the first landing craft even touched the sand.
Fast forward to 1962. The Cold War was in full swing, and President John F. Kennedy (who knew a thing or two about the ocean) decided we needed a permanent group of maritime ass-kickers who could operate on Sea, Air, and Land—hence, SEALs. These weren’t just frogmen anymore. They were parachuting into enemy territory, infiltrating jungles, blowing stuff up, and vanishing into the night before the enemy even knew what hit them. (More here)
From Vietnam to the Persian Gulf to every dust-covered hellhole where America’s enemies have set up shop, SEALs have been handling business. They captured drug lords, rescued hostages, took down terrorists, and sent entire bad-guy organizations straight to Davy Jones' Locker.
Sea Stories: When SEALs Make Waves
Let’s talk real Navy SEAL history. Ever heard of Operation Neptune Spear? That’s the mission where SEAL Team Six stormed a compound in Pakistan and took out Osama bin Laden in 2011. Picture this: a team of America’s most dangerous amphibious warfighters flies into hostile territory, drops from a chopper, breaches a stronghold, and finishes a decade-long manhunt in under 40 minutes. That’s SEAL work right there.
Or how about Captain Richard Phillips’ rescue? Somali pirates hijacked a U.S. cargo ship, thinking they were in charge. Big mistake. SEALs showed up, set up their sniper nests, and in a simultaneous triple headshot at night, on moving targets, from a pitching ship—they ended the crisis. If that doesn’t get you fired up, go back to drinking your lukewarm office coffee. (Read about it here)
The Navy SEAL Foundation: Supporting the Families Who Serve Too
Here’s the thing—while SEALs are out hunting America’s enemies, their families are holding down the home front. Deployments are brutal. Injuries happen. Some warriors don’t come home. That’s where the Navy SEAL Foundation comes in.
The NSF provides:
-
Strength Programs – Building capabilities and reducing stressors for warriors and their families.
-
Resilience Programs – Addressing tragedy and aiding recovery to help families bounce back.
-
Health Programs – Enhancing physical and mental wellness because a sound mind and body are mission-critical.
-
Education Support – Providing scholarships and development opportunities because “college debt” isn’t in the SEAL mindset.
-
Community Programs – Empowering connections and preserving legacy to keep the brotherhood strong.
They’ve already provided $1.69 million in scholarships and supported 870 NSW kids at summer camps just in 2023. Now, with your caffeine addiction, they can do even more. (Support them here)
Green Eyes Blend: The Brew of the Night Fighters
Alright, so why Green Eyes? Simple. It’s a tribute to the "Green Eyed Men"—a nickname whispered in dark corners of war zones, where shadows move with intent and bad guys don’t wake up to see the sunrise.
In the dead of night, when the world is pitch black and the enemy thinks they’re safe, a team of SEALs is already watching, waiting, closing in. Terrorist groups and insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq spoke in hushed voices about the Green Eyed Men—SEALs who seemed to appear out of nowhere, striking hard and vanishing without a trace. Somali pirates, too, feared the eerie green glow, knowing that when they saw it, death followed. One captured insurgent reportedly said, “We fear nothing... except the Green Eyes.”
